We have been asked multiple times about which membrane design is better for long term life and performance. We have tried to answer this question intuitively and comprehensively in the post below.
You may have a look at this informative illustration below.
Key Advantages of Single Bore Membranes -
1. For a given volume, you are provided with a higher effective filtration area
2. Removes the need to follow the old In-Out method of filtration
3. Provides the user with an opportunity to clean the membrane with better methods like air scouring, thereby saving on loss of permeate water as compared to Multi Bore Membranes. Air scouring is actually a boon to save water with use of Single bore Out-In membranes. While air scouring is not used in Multi bore membranes, Some multibore manufacturers seem to use this point to pose it as an advantage saying - "The user need not invest in a compressor and air scour system separately which using our Multi bore membrane". While this seems right at the beginning, one must understand that more of precious permeate is used to clean Multi bore membranes while very less is used for Single bore out-in fibers. Also, the major cost in UF is the operation cost, to run feed and backwash pumps. One may see that due to less backwash flow rates, lesser HP of the pump, the operation cost of Single bore fibers are better.
4. Reduces footprint, investment and number of membranes for a given expected flow
5. Importantly, the majority of Polymeric membrane manufacturers use Out-In Single Bore as the preferred method of filtration. (example - Hydranautics, GE, Suez, Dow, Toray) while Inge and a few minuscule spinoffs are the only ones who use Multi Bore design.
Be smart. Choose Out-In Single Bore.
