Water Hammering effect in UF Membranes - Part 1

Among the tertiary treatment or tertiary filtration systems, Micro and Ultrafiltration membranes are designed to operate at lower pressures of <3 bars. Generally, valves are used in Ultrafiltration systems to regulate and control flow. Valves are regularly also used in piping between the pump and the membrane to isolate the pump or the membrane as required. But while operating valves, care should be taken to allow enough time or to slow down the valve position change so as to not cause a sudden spike in pressure by rapid closing or rapid opening of the valve. If sudden opening or closure of valves happens, there is a risk of pressures spiking in the piping systems which has an adverse effect on membranes. So care should be taken to ensure valves are operated inline with good engineering practice and enough time is given for the closure and opening.
